This stellar example of the iconic FJ40 was part of a limited run series by TOYODA Restauraciones of Miami in 2018-19. Its work was meticulous and this is one of the most original and solid restorations we have seen—truly world class. It was a complete frame-off and nut-and-bolt job. Included were Australian Dobinsons front and rear leaf springs with anti-friction, inter-leaf liners, high-stretch alignment clips, front disc brakes, power steering, proper locking hubs, and more. All these carefully blended parts mean this Land Cruiser drives is exactly as one would hope, yet is easy to handle for even folks inexperienced with vintage machinery. The color combination is an essential part of its charm, too. The 4.2-liter, inline six starts and runs smoothly and the 4-speed gearbox (with ‘crawler’ first gear ratio) is precise and pleasurable to use. Indominable off road, this FJ40 actually rides quite smoothly on pavement, and the brakes are more than up to the task of corralling the engine’s whopping 145 horses. The interior is a wondrous Wayback Machine of switches and controls, all of which operate with period-correct, delicate motions, and the split bench front seat and “troop carrier” rears make it capable of moving multiple people about, top on or off. It also has Vintage Air A/C, meaning it can be used year round with the top left on.
